Reza Arefi is the head of Emerging Spectrum Strategies at Intel’s Next Generation & Standard group of Intel Corporation. In his role, he develops market-driven spectrum and regulatory strategies that support Intel’s future wireless product roadmaps.Reza has been actively contributing to IEEE standards(mainly IEEE 802, LMSC)and various industry groups on wireless systems since 1999, often in leadership roles. He has been involved in the IEEE LMSC standardization work of 802.11, 802.15, 802.16, and 802.20. His leadership roles included chairing ITU-R relations group of IEEE 802.16, chairing Regulatory Working Group of WiGig Alliance (started in 802.15, and now part of Wi-Fi Alliance), and chairing various activities in ITU-R’s Working Parties leading to development of several ITU-R Reports and Recommendations, latest of which is Recommendation ITU-R M.2101 on modeling of4th and 5th generation mobile systems in sharing and compatibility studies. Reza has also been actively involved in many industry forums over the years. Reza is currently a Vice President of Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) and executive board member representing Intel Corporation. He also leads GSA’s North American Spectrum group. An accomplished engineer, with more than 20 years of experience in his field, Reza has made critical contributions to the development of 5G standards and technologies. He is regularly invited to speak at various conferences (Globecomm, PTC, PIMRC, Sarnoff, IET, etc.) and industry/regulatory workshops, latest of which have been speaking as a panelist at London’s 5G Summit in May 2018 and presenting an invited paper at IEEE PIMRC in September 2018. He holds several wireless communications patents in the areas of mmWave technologies and spectrum sharing–advancements that have proven to be critical to the realization of 5G. These include novel schemes on utilization of large antenna arrays for millimeter-wave communications, methods and techniques that enable opportunistic or scheduled spectrum sharing, and wireless sensing. Reza has been a member of IEEE since the 80’s starting as a student member, and has been an IEEE-SA member for more than ten years. He holds an EE bachelor’s degree from Sharif University of Technology and a Master’s degree from West Virginia University.Rezais presently focused on identifying optimal spectral vehicles and necessary regulatory developments to enable the next generation mobile use cases, including drones, autonomous vehicles, enterprise and industrial solutions, and smart cities.
