Intel’s Kent Moffat explains the oneAPI initiative and beta release of Intel® oneAPI tools in a 3-minute video with insideHPC’s Rich Brueckner

Last month at the Supercomputing ’19 conference held in Denver, Intel rolled out the oneAPI initiative and a beta release of a comprehensive set of Intel® oneAPI programming toolkits. Inside HPC, the definitive blog about all things HPC, just published an article titled “Intel’s Kent Moffat describes the exciting new launch of oneAPI” with a 3-minute video interview about the Intel® oneAPI rollout with Kent Moffat, a senior product manager at Intel. The interview was conducted by Rich Brueckner, President of insideHPC Media. If you wanted the fastest possible introduction to the oneAPI initiative, this video is it.

In this insideHPC video, Moffat describes the oneAPI standards-based initiative and the set of Intel beta products that have just been released in support of that initiative. The beta release Intel oneAPI products serve as a reference implementation to the oneAPI specifications.

As for why Intel has mounted this significant development effort, requiring millions of engineering hours, Moffat says, “HPC is more than just CPUs today… there’s increasing use of FPGAs” and other hardware accelerators. You don’t want “m” ways to program all of these architectures and you especially don’t want “m times n” ways when you multiply the number of architectures by the number of vendors in the market.

The oneAPI initiative is an effort to converge on one unified programming model, and one language, that developers can use to target all of these heterogeneous processing architectures and be more productive. The greater goal of the oneAPI initiative is to encourage industry support for these various architectures and libraries.
