NITI Aayog, Intel and TIFR collaborate to set up a model International Center for Transformative Artificial Intelligence (ICTAI) aiming to solve major challenges in India. The center will focus on application-based AI research in healthcare, agriculture and smart mobility.

NITI Aayog, Intel and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) announced today (Sept 11) a collaboration to establish the first International Center for Transformative Artificial Intelligence (ICTAI), which will lead development and deployment of AI application-based research projects.  ICTAI is an important part of India’s national AI strategy to accelerate development of leadership in AI by a focused, cross-disciplinary effort that brings together “research” and “application” and enables building foundational national platforms and ecosystems to scale AI based services.  Intel was proud to be a part of this cooperation, which highlights the opportunities that are created when industry and governments work together.

Based in Bengaluru, this model ICTAI aims to conduct advanced research to incubate AI-led solutions in three important areas – healthcare, agriculture and smart mobility – by bringing together the expertise of Intel and TIFR.  Through this collaborative effort, ICTAI is chartered to develop AI foundational frameworks, tools, assets and standards, and support policy development related to IT and AI.  The ICTAI will also develop AI foundational technologies to promote applied research that can scale for national impact and will lead to the creation of a vibrant and self-sustaining AI ecosystem across India.  Collaboration with industry leaders, startups, and AI companies to productize technologies and IP developed at ICTAI will be another key area of focus.  The learnings and best practices developed through this model ICTAI will be used to set up the future ICTAIs across the country. Intel continues to work with governments around the world on efforts to develop a robust AI ecosystem to foster technology development, economic growth and solutions to some of the world’s hardest problems. AI can be a tide that lifts all boats, and Intel is looking to learn from leadership projects like ICTAI to help all countries innovate.
