Marjorie-Dickman-web-Sept-2012-Final.jpgFrom Intel® GO™ self-driving car solutions and a global 5G modem, to computing advances in virtual reality and artificial intelligence, Intel showcased a number of amazing technologies at this year’s CES.  What do all of these cutting-edge innovations have in common?  They are part of the unprecedented technological transformation that we have come to know as the Internet of Things (IoT) and, more broadly, as the virtuous cycle of growth that powers the cloud and drives an increasingly smart, connected world.

Indeed, the IoT – and this virtuous cycle of growth – is transforming our world from isolated systems to Internet-enabled devices that can network and communicate with each other and the cloud.  This technological transformation is creating economic and societal value in new and exciting ways across many market sectors:

  • Automotive and Transportation: From self-driving cars to smart transportation and logistics, the IoT can save lives, reduce traffic, and minimize environmental impact.

  • Manufacturing: IoT technology enables factories to unlock operational efficiency, optimize production, and increase worker safety.

  • Retail and Mobile Payments: The IoT offers opportunities to increase supply chain efficiencies, develop new services, and reshape the customer experience.

  • Energy: Through the IoT, power grid devices and systems can share information in real time to distribute and manage energy more efficiently.

  • Healthcare: The IoT is transforming healthcare, from clinical wearables to first-responder tablets and sophisticated surgical suite equipment.

  • Smart Buildings: The IoT is addressing energy costs, sustainability, and code compliance by connecting, managing, and securing devices that collect data from building systems.

  • Agriculture and Farming: The IoT offers opportunities to increase efficiencies in the irrigation process and improve livestock management.

Senators Fischer, Booker, Gardner and Schatz understand the importance of harnessing these vast IoT opportunities, and Intel commends their forward-thinking vision to advance a national strategy for U.S. IoT leadership.  Their bipartisan re-introduction of the “Developing Innovation and Growing the Internet of Things (DIGIT) Act” recognizes that a pro-innovation national IoT strategy will help solve important societal issues and drive U.S. competitiveness for decades to come – fueling GDP, creating new jobs, and bolstering the U.S. economy.  Intel looks forward to continuing to work with the DIGIT Act sponsors and other stakeholders across government, industry and academia to enable America’s IoT future.
