On the evening of January 28, Intel was privileged to join the European Data Protection Supervisor’s office and the National Cyber Security Alliance in marking Data Privacy Day by hosting a transatlantic dialog on data protection and privacy.   The event was held at the offices of the EDPS in Brussels where European Data Protection Supervisor Giovanni Buttarelli delivered opening remarks. Ted Dean, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Services, U.S. Department of Commerce International Trade Administration, joined the event by video conference; Federal Trade Commissioner Julie Brill participated through pre-recorded remarks. Paula Bruening, Intel Senior Counsel for Global Privacy Policy delivered brief comments on behalf of Intel. Leonardo Cervera Navas, Head of Unit at EDPS welcomed guests, provided context and moderated the discussion.

Remarks that evening turned to the privacy values shared by the United States and Europe, and the recognition that effective, workable privacy and data protection is essential to the success of our economies and to fostering a trusted environment and data practices that respect the rights and interests of individuals. Participants reviewed the work of their respective offices, their engagement to address common concerns and their work toward resolving issues related to Safe Harbor. Paula spoke about Intel’s Rethink Privacy initiative, particularly about the role of principles of fair information practices in serving as a common language for privacy. Her remarks noted that while resolving details presents challenges, and there will always be differences, our shared values about privacy and respect for the individual, supported by the FIPPs, will lead us to mutually workable solutions that will allow us to reap the benefits of technology and the robust use of data.  The event closed after a brief discussion.

We are pleased to make a video recording of this event available to you.
