A Personal Journey

Intel recently hosted the 3rd Annual Latino Tech Fest as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to promote greater representation in tech. Intel VP Albert Diaz kicked off the event by welcoming attendees to Intel’s Hillsboro campus. He shared his own journey from sociology major to manufacturing systems engineer, and explained how his early fascination with statistical social psychology informed his later career in the data center. He highlighted that technologists come from all backgrounds, interests and perspectives, and encouraged the assembly to make the most of the opportunity to connect with one another and build a strong network, remarking that all the power needed to increase representation in tech lay in their hands.

Better Together

Raquel Tamez, CEO of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), was invited to discuss her organization’s mission to increase Hispanic representation in STEM. Her overall message was one of community, the power of networking and the importance of working together to drive progress. She noted that the Hispanic community brings fresh perspectives, loyalty and an incredible work ethic to the table, and is an under-tapped resource that can help close the skilled workers gap in tech. She also commended Intel’s commitment to reaching full representation in its U.S. workforce and highlighted the company’s diversity and inclusion strategy as a role model for other companies in the industry.

Career Building 101

Workshops were offered for both professional and student tracks. The IdeaLab taught creative thinking and goal setting skills in a setting geared toward high school students, while professionals could take advantage of recruiting opportunities as well as classes on interview prep and building personal brands.
