Have you ever thought about taking a sandwich year? (For those of you unfamiliar with that term, it’s when 1st and 2nd year Bachelor Students do a one-year placement in industry as part of their degree.) It’s a great opportunity to get some hands-on experience in the industry of your choice, giving you a better feel for the kind of work you’d be involved in after graduating. We know it’s a popular choice here in the UK, that’s why we welcomed over 100 students to our “Life at Intel UK” days at our Swindon Headquarters recently. We wanted to give students a chance to come and find out why pursuing a placement would help with their career and to share the placements we have available at Intel.

So, what happens at a “Life at Intel UK” day? We really wanted the day to be about the students and give them a chance to experience Intel and ask questions. Over the course of the 3 hours the students were with us, they were able to get some hands-on time with our latest technology and products, they chatted with Intel employees about what Life at Intel is like (and checked out some of our videos), as well as attended a CV workshop. As happy as we were to accommodate a large group, we know that activities are more meaningful and more interactive when you’re in a smaller group, so we separated everyone into smaller groups and each group rotated to the different activities.

We had the biggest room in the building set up to display our latest products as well as demos for students to try out, including some games and some connected guitars to experience music with computers. It was pretty cool to see the students rock out and talk to the engineers who worked on these products about their work! (Not to mention fun!)

When people think about working for Intel, they mostly think of careers in Engineering and IT, when we actually have career paths for everyone from Marketing to Finance to HR and Business Operations, to just name a few! To share the different types of careers we have, we invited employees from a variety of disciplines to share what it’s like to work at Intel. They all had some pretty fascinating stories to share!

While there was plenty of fun to be had, we also wanted students to leave that day with something tangible, so our recruiters put on a CV workshop. The workshop was full of helpful tips and tricks on how to write a good CV and cover letter and how to prepare for an interview/assessment center. We also went over the application process from submitting a CV to getting an offer for a placement.

And what a day it was! The students were very enthusiastic throughout the day and had lots of great feedback to share with is. A few students told us that they wouldn’t have considered applying to Intel before but after they attended the Life at Intel UK day, they changed their minds! This was the second year in a row we put on this type of event and we’ve successfully hired students who have attended! So if you’re looking for a placement, check us out on the UK Placement Programme page!
