Intelligent Gateways: The Key to Unlocking Valuable IoT Data

The business transformation opportunity for the Internet of Things (IoT) is substantial. IOT Connected DevicesMcKinsey Global Institute reported that the number of connected machines has grown 300 percent over the past five years, thanks in large part to new IoT solutions that help companies make more efficient and productive use of their assets and processes against an estimated $36 trillion in total operating costs.1 Intelligent gateway solutions are a key ingredient for making IoT real for businesses today.

Gateway solutions are platforms that enable companies to seamlessly integrate, aggregate, share and filter data from legacy devices to the cloud and back—without having to replace or upgrade existing infrastructure. This is critical when you consider that 85 percent of all legacy devices and systems remain isolated and unconnected2 and that legacy commercial and industrial applications are very expensive to replace.

By attaching gateways to existing devices, companies can capture and utilize data to optimize factory efficiencies, conduct cost-saving predictive maintenance and create new value-added services. For example, Daikin Applied, the world’s largest HVAC manufacturer, is connecting its Rebel* rooftop units with Intel® processor-based gateways to avoid expensive repairs with proactive maintenance. Daikin Applied estimates that adding intelligence to its systems can reduce energy consumption within a building by as much as 50 percent.

Intel is bringing solutions to market based on the Intel® Quark SoC X1000 and Inte Atom processor E3800 product family, supported by a McAfee and Wind River software stack to connect, manage, and secure gateways. This enables device designers to prototype and deploy services faster and focus on creating new, value-added services.
