Reflections on Responsibility and Results

Today is one of my proudest moments during my time at Intel. I am in New York to represent Intel tonight at the second JUST Capital awards, where JUST Capital and Forbes will recognize Intel with the prestigious honor of being named America’s Most JUST Company on the new JUST 100 ranking.

The ranking recognizes the top 100 companies that effectively combine corporate responsibility with business success—a strategy we have focused on at Intel now for many years. They evaluate the largest U.S. companies across a range of factors, based on what members of the American public view as the most important elements of corporate responsibility—from building better and more inclusive workplaces, to advancing environmental sustainability and supporting local communities. Technology companies performed well on this year’s list, including top overall scores for Alphabet, Cisco, IBM, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Texas Instruments, as did other large brands such as Accenture, Nike, PepsiCo, and P&G.

As a company, Intel is a driving force behind the data revolution that is transforming industries and opening up new opportunities. Looking ahead, we are exploring ways to empower more people through our technology and harness the power of data to address society’s more complex issues. As our results so far this year have shown, it is possible to balance corporate responsibility with business success, and indeed to make them inextricable from each other.

The JUST Capital list is one of many awards and recognitions that our teams around the world have received this year. In 2017 we were also honored as one of four recipients of the Stop Slavery Award for our efforts to combat forced and bonded labor and our dedication to human rights in our supply chain. Our diversity and inclusion mission has been acknowledged by Working Mother’s 100 Best Companies and Human Rights Campaign. We were also recognized by the US EPA for being the largest voluntary corporate purchaser of green power in the U.S. and made the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations list.

I’m proud that these rankings and awards recognize many different aspects of our work on corporate responsibility. But what I’m most proud of—and what I truly love most about my job—are the people I get to work with day in and day out who are behind these results. I’m fortunate to work with a diverse group of coworkers around the world who have deep expertise in fields like environmental engineering, commodity management, industrial hygiene, talent recruiting, social science, financial analysis, legal, and many more. Collectively, they continually push us to be better as a company, challenge us to think longer-term and go beyond what is required, and lead initiatives tackling industry-wide challenges.

Each one of these awards reflects not only a team driving strategies and results, but also the talent and commitment of 100,000 employees around the world who make decisions every day that contribute to our responsible and ethical business culture and who have collectively donated more than 6 million volunteer hours in our local communities during the past five years. Any recognition of Intel is a recognition of them.

About Suzanne Fallender

Suzanne Fallender is Intel’s Director of Corporate Responsibility. In this role, she collaborates with key stakeholders across the company to integrate corporate responsibility concepts into company strategies, policies, public reporting, and stakeholder engagement activities to advance Intel’s corporate responsibility leadership and create positive social impact and business value. Suzanne leads a team of experienced professionals who engage with internal and external groups to review Intel’s corporate responsibility performance and to identify new opportunities to apply Intel’s technology and expertise to address social and environmental challenges. The team also works closely with Intel’s investor relations and corporate governance groups to drive an integrated outreach strategy with investors on governance and corporate responsibility issues. Suzanne has more than 20 years of experience in the field of corporate responsibility and socially responsible investment. During her time at Intel, Suzanne has held a number of corporate responsibility-related roles, including leading programs empowering girls and women through technology. Prior to Intel, Suzanne served as Vice President at Institutional Shareholder Services where she managed the firm’s socially responsible investing division. Suzanne holds an M.B.A. from the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University and a B.A. from Trinity College in Hartford, CT. She has served on a number of leading industry advisory boards and committees on sustainability and corporate responsibility over the past decade and currently is a member of the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship’s Executive Forum and the Net Impact Advisory Council.
