Even before the Intel Centrino mobile technology mantra hit the scene in 2003, driving up laptop performance and increasing battery life required more than better, more efficient processors. It took a holistic approach of building efficiency into just about every component and feature — from the integrated wireless chips to smarter screens, better batteries and hard drives.

At IDF this week, I was eager to learn more about solid state drives (SSD), which are starting to become available in new laptops and other computers hitting the market. I grabbed an Intel SSD on the IDF Showcase floor, even juggle a few the wallet-sized solid state hard drives. They are nifty.

During Dadi Perlmutter’s Mobility technology keynote at IDF, we learned that Solid State Drives that can store 80 gigabytes of data are expected to go into production in 30 days with 160 gigabytes before the end of the year. The prices look a little higher than the hard drive in my new laptop, but the performance is higher, too — both in writing speed and lower energy consumption. These SSDs are filled with NAND memory chips and have no moving parts. They’re lighter than the spinning disk hard drive I have inside my HP work laptop, and they’re more rugged — that’s why I was allowed to juggle them…and even drop them several times…no harm done.

The new drives that will likely bring benefits to true mobile computing enthusiasts and companies who want their big server computers to be more energy efficient — with no moving parts, these SSDs run cool and require less electricity. If you’re using an SSD today, please let me know what how it’s workin’ for you.

The middle video shows an Intel SSD strapped to an off-road motocross bike racing in the Baja 500 track in Mexico, plus there two other videos on the benefits of Intel’s SSDs.

Researchers from the Intel lab in Pittsburgh have been working with physicians on a tool to assist them in diagnosing skin cancer. At IDF in San Francisco this week, they demonstrated the project. Once a digital photo of the skin lesion is captured, doctors can use the image to query for similar cases in a large database of skin lesions that have already been diagnosed. Having access to this collection of relevant knowledge, doctors will have more information to treat their patients.

ISADS stands for Interactive Search Assisted Decision Support. The goal is to enable doctors to make more informed decisions about a given case by presenting relevant annotated cases from large medical repositories. Unlike systems that make decisions for the physicians, ISADS is a tool for search and comparison to medically relevant annotated medical images, where retrieval is based on image content rather than text or metadata.

Researcher Mei Chen describes the project: One application we are working on is ISADS for melanoma detection. Melanoma is the most fatal kind of skin cancer, and its incidence has been increasing in the U.S. To develop an application for real clinical practice, we collaborate with physicians from University of Pittsburgh http://www.upmc.com/home.htm to make it fit into the clinical work flow. To achieve this we streamline and automate the operations as well as designing the interface to be physician-friendly with just the right features.

Automated interpretation of medical images is challenging. From removing artifacts to finding lesion boundaries to extracting color characteristics, we develop algorithms that are driven by domain-knowledge, employ computer vision techniques and statistical machine learning to keep improving the performance. Hopefully in time, this tool will enable doctors to more quickly and accurately diagnose melanoma.

This video has the “stuff” we don’t always hear of see at an Intel Developer Forum keynote. Sure Intel Chairman Craig Barrett talked about WiMAX, Digital Health and how technology is spreading across the globe. But that “stuff” was overshadowed by Dr. Barrett’s passion for inspiring innovation, especially in improving education, healthcare, economic development and the environment.

In fact, he put $ where his passion is when he kicked off Inspire-Empower contest calling for the best technology solutions to address these four areas. The contest will award seed funding of $100,000 USD to one winner in each category.

So step up to the challenge from wherever you are.

Justin Rattner gave a pretty fascinating keynote at IDF today about what he thought the big advances would be by 2050. He included three demonstrations from some out-there research that is happening in some of intel’s “Lab-lets” in Seattle and Pittsburgh. I had a chance to chat with a few of the researchers a few weeks before to get a sneak peak and grabbed some video of their work - take a look at the videos below to see what Rattner showed today in his keynote:

Cutting last cord - power:

Imagine having the ability to walk into an airport or room with your laptop and instead of consuming battery, it is recharged. Based on principles proposed by MIT physicists, Intel researchers have been working on a Wireless Resonant Energy Link (WREL). Rattner demonstrated powering a 60-watt light bulb without the use of a plug or wire of any kind, which is more than is needed for a typical laptop. Josh Smith, a principle engineer at Intel, and intern Alanson Sample are leading the research effort out of our Seattle lab and I had a chance to see it in action and chat with him before the keynote - check out the video to see for yourself:

“Sensitive” Robots:

Rattner demonstrated two working personal robot prototypes developed at Intel’s research labs - these are meant to someday be at home with you instead of in a manufacturing floor. One of the demonstrations showed electric field pre-touch that has been built into a robot hand. The technique is a novel sense used by fish but not humans, so it can “feel” objects before it even touches them. The other demonstration was a complete autonomous mobile manipulation robot that can recognize faces and interpret and execute commands as generic as “please clean this mess” using state-of-the-art motion planning, manipulation, perception and artificial intelligence. Check out this video I took just before the keynote started
