Eco-Technology Great Debates: Attend or Follow Live Online This Wednesday June 11
posted by Annie Rodkins on June 09, 2008
Join an impressive line-up of panelists and speakers from IDC, Microsoft, Sun, IBM, InfoWorld, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, Intel and many more in discussing advances and challenges of energy-efficient computing.
If you are unable to join this event, please post any questions or comments that you may have for the speakers and we’ll be sure to pass them along. View the full entry to learn additional details and to follow the online livecast. We hope you will join us!
Live streaming will begin around 1pm Pacific TIme on Wednesday, June 11 2008.
Topics will include:
- Alternating Current (AC) vs. Direct Current (DC) Power: Which power architecture is best? How efficient are they really? Where would one use DC instead of AC? Is high-efficiency AC as good as DC? Isn’t it easier to do? What about safety? Can we mix types? Cost to build? TCO? Reliability?
- Liquid vs. Air Cooling: We all know water is a better heat transfer fluid than air; does that make liquid cooling more efficient than air cooling? What does liquid cooling mean? Rack level, server level, or chip level? Isn’t a data center with airflow segregation more efficient than standard air cooling? What about the cost to buy and cost to run? Leaks and reliability?
- Thick vs. Thin Clients: The debaters will discuss the TCO analysis and energy efficiency of a thin client model versus their thicker alternatives.

I am looking forward to watching. Do you think you can upload this to GreenEnergyTV.com too? They air “Green” videos and I know they have a lot of viewers that would be interested in seeing this!
their site is www.greenenergytv.com and you click UPLOAD video (button at top of site).
Cheers!

Any idea on how to get around the company access control filter? Streaming TV is apparently blocked. I tried using the BlueCoat tools but that got me nowhere.
Thanks.
Jack

it is a ‘supply-demand’ issue; which drives speculation, and certainly the decline of the dollar — this person should STAY on topic. Talk about server energy — even if there was NOT a problem with oil we would still be concerned about server/ data center power efficiency.

Please focus on the data centers — we all know that we MUST conserve.

@Jack Pouchet: unfortunately some corporate firewalls block live streaming broadcasts by blocking access to specific ports. The only solution that I know of is for the IT department to allow the incoming livestream.
The debate will be recorded and available for viewing later today.
Many apologies, -Annie

Utilities use HVDC to move power as a way to isolate grids and avoid problems with frequency synchronization!
