Centrino 2 live in the wild…..WiMAX gods smile down with envy and delight

posted by Craig Raymond on May 30, 2008

Live from Computex 2008 in Taipei, your favorite demo guy gets his hands on the real deal.

I’ve never said that being a demo guy doesn’t have its perks. And today I’ve got my privileged hands on a brand spanking new Asus Centrino 2 (“Montevina” for us nerds) system, as I blog away under the sexy glow of my new mobile powerhouse. Mmmmmmmm…..Asus M51VA with Penryn (drool); I can feel the high-K love quadrupling my words per minute as we speak. Well, not really. But I do want to finish up my post so I can get back to playing, er…testing, World of Warcraft over the live Fitel WiMAX network here in Taipei.

That’s right. You heard me correctly. Montevina, WiMAX; live in Taipei. Kind of strange to say it all in one mouthful, but it’s finally here.

The In-Car Infotainment Revolution

posted by Ton Steenman on May 20, 2008

Did you know that the average American spends more than 300 hours per year in their car? That’s equivalent to 7.5 work weeks stuck behind the wheel. Imagine now if a Car OEM or service provider could find a way to use that “captive” time of the consumer to both their, and the consumers benefit.

The in-vehicle infotainment and telematics market is really heating up! There are announcements from every corner of the automotive industry and numerous new entrants introducing products, initiatives or innovative research. This is clearly a market in transition as personalized mobile media and internet on-the-go are quickly becoming highly desirable by consumers. Meanwhile, the automotive OEMs scramble to keep pace with both the consumer desire to bring personalized content into the car, and their own interest to leverage this into a “branded” experience. However, the industry is attempting to deliver on breakthrough capabilities without driving the required platform change to make it sustainable.

My search for the one device…..and the horrible failure that followed……

posted by Craig Raymond on May 14, 2008

It’s nice to ease into things after a long sabbatical break. It’s amazing the soul searching you can enjoy stepping out of the tech industry for a brief, fleeting spell. But I’ve brought back with me a few words of wisdom to this week’s blog from the fruits of my travels.

I hate my phone.

It used to be a sort of non-confrontational thing. I knew my phone was stupid, and I would forgive it, ‘cause it was only a dumb phone. But if we just made phone calls together, everything was lovely. Let’s say my expectations were low in the early stages of our relationship. And then there were smarter and smarter phones; keyboards, push mail, and touch screens (oh my!). Then I thought that my phone could be everything that I wanted her to be. The one device for everything I need while away from my laptop.

My 1st manager at Intel consistently wore 2 phones, a pager, blackberry (back when it was only a smart pager), mp3 player, and a belt around his waist. He always commented on how it made him feel like Batman to have a utility belt. I vowed that would never happen to me, ever. And the dream of the one device was born.

WiMAX History in the Making

posted by Kari Aakre on May 07, 2008

If you haven’t heard the news yet, check out the press release that Clearwire and Sprint issued bright and early this morning (I was wide awake at 3 a.m. when the news hit). The two companies entered into an agreement to combine their WiMAX wireless broadband businesses to form a new wireless communications company to be named Clearwire. They also announced that Intel Capital, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Google and Bright House Networks invested a combined $3.2 billion in the new company.

Why is this history in the making?

Launching the Centrino based Asus Lamborghini VX3 in Style

posted by Connie Brown on May 01, 2008

I missed out on one cool work related party last week filled with fast laptops and fast cars. Yes, I just said cool and work party in the same sentence. Just outside of L.A., California, Intel co-hosted the launch party of the sleek new ASUS-Lamborghini VX3. This was an all-out, true “L.A.” style celebrity studded affair. The lineup included Luke Perry of 90210 fame, Eric Roberts (soon appearing in the new Batman flick), and comedian Jamie Kennedy at the Orange County Lamborghini dealership. Here’s some sights and sounds from the event.
