Intel’s Silverthorne Chip Inside Smaller, Amazing MIDs

Intel Mobile Internet Device (MID) man Mark Parker recently showed me what he’s cookin’ up for this month’s Intel Developer Forum (IDF). I remember well his lively and much talked about blog post and video from the IDF Beijing this past April.

I just had to see how things have change. Keep in mind, we live in the epicenter whirl of Moore’s Law. Nothing inside Intel stays the same for very long around here…except the drive and desire for new things.

The lights came up. Anand Chandrasekher called me from the IDF keynote stage. I walked on stage and Anand introduced the newest McCaslin based Ultra Mobile Devices for 2007. – Mark Parker April 18 in Beijing

Since then, Mark has become even more dedicated to working with chip and device designers helping bring to market new Mobile Internet Devices. Many new things are colliding here: new product category plus new chip design and platform to meet low cost, high performance, low battery consumption needs, and a variety capabilities for connecting wirelessly to the Internet.

Some refer to these devices as a “mobile phone on steroids” or “miniature laptop” or “pocketable PC.” They aim to keep you connected to everything you need on the Internet: videos, photos and music as well as tapping into your essential work needs…like your Facebook account!

The Intel team has pulled together some good examples for how people could use MIDs and Ultra Mobile Person Computers (UMPCs) .

Here Mark shows the look and feel of new MIDs and shows the fruits (a chip and wafer) from hard work by Intel’s Silverthorne and Poulsbo silicon teams. Mark mentions several product codenames to listen for and watch come to life at IDF, where Mark is likely to show more concept devices he would yet show me!
