Parallel Computing: making sequential software rare

posted by Timothy Mattson on June 28, 2007

In my job at Intel, I get to travel far and wide to meet with research groups working on parallel computing. And as travel, I am constantly struck by the differences between the state of HW and SW in parallel computing.

What's in a research blog header?

posted by Sean Koehl on June 25, 2007

First, I want to thank you for taking the time to read this blog. Brian McCarthy and I will be taking on the roles of editors and keeping you apprised of the latest and greatest research at Intel. We work in a part of Intel’s central labs called Strategy and Planning which exists to facilitate interactions amongst all of the central labs, between these labs and other Intel groups, and between the labs and the outside world. In the case of this blog, we are working to facilitate a dialog between some of our key researchers and yourselves.

Silicon Photonics - The path to low cost integrated optics

posted by Ansheng Liu on June 22, 2007

You may hear about the buzz word “Silicon Photonics” from the press coverage in the last few years. In fact, Silicon Photonics (or silicon based optoelectronics) is beginning to become a technical focus, because it potentially offers an entirely new generation of low-cost photonic integrated circuits, which will perform functions traditionally accomplished using much more expensive components based on III-V semiconductor materials. The primary driving force for silicon photonics development is the demand for cost effective optical interconnect technology in microelectronics industry. It is also expected that silicon photonics could find a wider range of applications beyond the optical communications arena.

Trends in short-range wireless personal area networking (WPAN) technology

posted by Jeffrey Foerster on June 19, 2007

Bluetooth can be considered the first wireless personal area networking (WPAN) technology accepted in the market enabling new usages like hands-free cell phone connectivity, wireless headsets, electronic wallet transactions, and others. For this discussion, WPAN technology is considered to support ranges of less than 10 meters or within a single room, as compared to wireless local area networking (WLAN), enabled by WiFi, which can cover a home.
