Infomania paper published – come and get it!

posted by Nathan Zeldes on August 14, 2007

In my previous posts I’ve hinted often at the body of research that we’ve used to understand the impact of the Information Overload problem. We summarized all this research as a White Paper that makes a strong case for taking action to solve this problem; and indeed, this paper played a key role in convincing our senior management at Intel to authorize the actions I report here from time to time. The idea was to analyze the problem’s impact in detail, and to include dozens of footnotes pointing to a rich bibliography that proves each point we’re making with real data from surveys, controlled experiments and field observations in real organizations.

And now, at last, I can share this powerful tool with you… we’ve just published it on First Monday, the peer-reviewed online journal, under the name “Infomania: why we can’t ignore it any longer”, by myself, my fellow blogger David Sward and our colleague Dr. Sigal Louchheim.

Enjoy, disseminate, and let us know here whether it is useful to you in your own organization!

Interesting term. Information is always insufficient to create a solution. And only intuition helps to achieve it i.e. our mind can’t overloaded by any information - our subconscious filters it, finds useful elements and by combining it offers the solution.

It can be only disoriented by the immediate problems or instructions what to do from the other(s) (minds). It’s up to different knowledge of things and not peer-to-peer organization. One asks something or orders to solve their problems not offering anything useful when he/she has no information or experience of work on the subject. Good team is a partnership of professionals that are in touch and any related communication is welcomed.

Adding to the infomania is the constant flow of IM’s hitting my desktop like a ringing telephone begging me to stop ‘doing email’ and instead ‘do my IM’ first… always promising “it take just a second” or “I’ll make it quick” … yeh right! When has that ever happened? Sure quick to interrupt, not so quick to get back to doing the work I need to be doing.

I think with the internet dawning upon us, there is definitely an information overload. I often find it difficult cause there are so many different opinions flying in although i think its really great!
