Intel IoT and Impinj Usher in a New Era for Inventory Visibility

A shopper is pleased that her local store uses the Intel Retail Sensor Platform for inventory tracking. As a result, she just scored the best bag ever.

As our connected retail ecosystem grows ever larger, I’m particularly excited that we are working more closely with Impinj. Together, we are developing a solution comprised of both Intel and Impinj components to create an offering that meets the needs of modern retailers. This means the Intel Retail Sensor Platform will now be part of Impinj’s innovative RAIN RFID platform. Our collaboration with Impinj is nearly a decade in the making, fueled by the rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT).

As part of the solution, Impinj will brand and sell the Intel Retail Sensor Platform which will integrate with Impinj ItemSense software.  ItemSense provides Item Intelligence, information to applications, and will make application integration and deployment easy for the Retail Sensor Platform.

The Retail Sensor Platform since inception has relied on the Impinj Indy RS2000 Reader SiP (system-in-package) for performance and reliability for the RFID component of the platform. Also, ItemSense is specified to run on Intel® Core™ i5 and i7 processors.

We decided to deepen our relationship to meet the needs of modern retailers. As the connected retail industry works to solve critical operational and business growth bottlenecks, especially around better inventory visibility, the collective power of collaboration around IoT is rising to the forefront.

“This joint initiative incorporates technology and know-how from both companies,” said Eric Brodersen, Impinj president and COO. “The powerful combination of the Retail Sensor Platform and ItemSense will help retailers grow their top line and gather data they can process with third-party analytics applications to help transform their business.”

To help retailers improve store operations, boost top line sales and deliver actionable data analytics, the Intel Retail Sensor Platform will be available as part of the Impinj Platform to deliver inventory intelligence. The combined offering provides highly accurate inventory tracking, robust customer insights, and overall operational efficiency, all beautifully embedded in an approachable architecture designed with connected retail in mind.

Key Benefits:

  • Near-100 percent inventory accuracy
  • Increased top-line sales through better on-shelf availability
  • Boosted sales from omni-channel fulfillment
  • Application-ready platform for business-transforming data analytics

Solutions featuring the platform were a hit at RFID Journal Live! in Orlando and at the NRF Big Show in New York City and earlier this year.

The Intel Retail Sensor Platform is a simple and affordable way for both online and brick-and-mortar retailers to achieve near real-time inventory intelligence. It tracks items through RFID tags, preserving customer privacy, while keeping sales staff informed with inventory visibility, location tracking, and customer behavior. It can reduce losses from misplaced or out-of-stock items, and inventory shrink. To top it off, the open source Trusted Analytics Platform (TAP) enables access to retail big data analytics in the cloud for deep insight.
