I (Heart) TV and I (Heart) Internet… Can’t I Have Both?

Eric Kim’s keynote might have been one of the most entertaining I’ve attended. Not only because he quoted one of my favorite journalists (and the namesake of my communication school – Edward R. Murrow). Nor was it because he donned a red jacket to act as game show host (which he did). Not even because he gave away three Samsung HD televisions. The guy was a hit (with me at least) because he told us, the audience, how we were going to be able to get a full internet experience though our next-generation televisions.

Who doesn’t like a good game show? I know I do. Imagine my glee when the turntable on stage revealed three contestants, traditional game show style. They answered questions about TV usage and in the end all walked away with new Samsung televisions.

Through advancements in the new Intel Media processor CE3100 (Canmore), internet and TV will live together within the same system better than ever before – with no loss to either. Between the silicon advancements and widgets developed by Yahoo!, users will experience a rich, full internet that seamlessly integrates into their TV watching habits, giving them the ability to explore the world brought to them through the TV via television or the internet.

Users will be able to access sports scores, stocks, Flickr and more through the screen-bottom toolbar. Taking traditional picture-in-picture a bit further another task the new CE3100 will enhance. Long gone will be the days of jerky, soundless fast-forwarding. The new technologies that will be embedded in these sets will allow for full fast-forward capabilities of every frame, rather than today’s every couple of frame fast-forwarding. I’ll finally have a way to get through watching The Notebook with the ladies… on 6x fast-forward!
