With the constant buzz about closing the digital divide, is there really anything left to say? I didn’t think so until I met Prof. Sheizaf Rafaeli.
Prof. Rafaeli is head of the Center for the Study of the Information Society at Haifa University and head of the School of Management at Haifa University. He addressed the Fifth Annual Sderot Conference for Social and Economic Policy (where Intel Israel led the discussion on the subject of the digital divide) and opened my eyes to a whole new way of looking at the divide. You could say his comments made me stop staring across the top of the divide and got me looking deep down into it.

There is more to CSR than climate change or green initiatives. However with the dominance of those issues on the radar screen, it might be easy to forget that. One of the concepts I’ve tried to introduce this year in our decision making and communications is the ability to measure social impact.

We had an interesting discussion today and it wasn’t academic. The topic was about money and how to best spend it for both the environment and financial return. The question was about spending money on the purchase of “green power”. The argument was made that it would be more valuable to spend $100K (a made up number for this blog) on new energy efficient equipment than it would on green power.

In a few weeks I’ll be traveling to China. It’s the second time I’m traveling there. While I enjoy flying small planes and generally like to fly, flying commercially isn’t something I look forward to anymore. But in this case, the purpose of my trip is so worth the stress. You see, our local CSR team in China has designed an ambitious plan that heads off a nascent but growing social problem resulting from the economic boom we’ve all been hearing about....

We are in the midst of pulling all the content and data together for our 2007 Corporate Responsibility Report that will be published in May, 2008. We’ve been doing this a long time and have used many different formats to obtain feedback in order to improve the Intel report each year.

So, what do the Tech Awards, Net Impact, socially responsible investors, Fab 32, Penryn, and sunflowers have in common? Not much other than the fact that you find them all in this short blog post and they are all part of our broader sustainability initiatives that have been occurring in just the past 10 days. Please bear with me while I try to connect these dots.

I’m having a ball referring to the CSR report we launched in Israel last week as a “glocal” CSR report (English, Hebrew). Although, it’s not my invention, I think glocal is a great word because it does more than just combine global and local; it merges the two approaches into a single seamless concept. And that’s what we’ve done with the latest CSR Report from Israel: brought together all the various elements of both global and local corporate responsibility.
