Comcast CEO Keynote - Cable is Getting Hip!

posted by Esther Andrews on January 08, 2008

Comcast CEO Brian Roberts announced the transition to “Comcast 3.0” that will give customers what they want, when and where they want it. “The consumer is king,” he said, not the content or distribution. He talked about a number of new technologies, including tru2way* Technology, an open, 2-way cable platform delivering the end of set-top cable boxes for devices with the technology built in. Intel is just one of many corporations supporting tru2way* with other industry players such as Panasonic, Cisco, LG, Sun, Motorola, and Samsung joining in.

Mr. Roberts also unveiled the AnyPlay* device, a collaboration between Comcast and Panasonic - the first portable Digital Video Recorder and DVD player. You can use it to record your content on the device while it’s ported in a docking station, then take it with you wherever you go.

Other announcements included Project Infinity* for millions of instantaneous programming choices including user generated content; Comcast Digital Voice* for caller ID on your TV - you’ll never have to leave the couch; Smart Zone* Communications Center for checking email and voicemail from a PC anywhere; FANCAST* (with some onstage help from Ryan Seacrest) - a personalized web-based entertainment service; and the technology I can’t wait for - DOCSIS* 3.0, which is wideband rolling out this year that will enable the download of a 2-hour HD movie in under 4 minutes.

If all that doesn’t prove that Comcast and cable TV are getting hip, check out the Flight of the Conchords* HBO TV series, that the Comcast CEO said is what he’s watching at home. Jermaine Clement and Bret McKenzie who play themselves in the show shared their no-holds barred entertainment with the crowd. I can’t wait to get back home to check out for myself what Comcast has on tap for us to enjoy our entertainment in 2008!
